Call for Ceramics Instructor
The Garfield Park Arts Center (GPAC) is seeking an instructor to teach an adult beginner ceramics class for 2020. These classes will center around a project planned by the instructor, and are meant to introduce students to basic clay handbuilding techniques. The instructor must commit to holding class once a week (Tuesday or Thursday) in the evening. Each course lasts 4 weeks, and repeats through the end of the year (though the project does not have to be the same).
We focus on handbuilding techniques as we do not currently have pottery wheels for hand-throwing. We do have a clay studio stocked with clay tools and glazes, a slab roller, and a kiln. We order clay from Brickyard Ceramics (Amaco), and typically have 11-M, 29-M, and 77-M in stock at GPAC for students to purchase.
GPAC pays instructors $20/hour for instruction and prep time. Instructors submit their invoices at the end of each session to management, and a check is cut and mailed.
To apply for this position, email the following:
- A current resume that describes teaching experience
- 5 or more images of your work
- An example curriculum for a 4-week course that includes a project title, at least 2 objectives, and firing schedule.
- Which time slot you prefer: Tuesdays at either 6-8 pm or 7-9 pm; Thursdays at either 6-8 pm, or 7-9 pm.
Submission accepted until Oct. 25. Candidates will be contacted no later than Nov. 8 to schedule an interview.
We are always on the lookout for new and fun classes and workshops to offer to the community. Currently, the Garfield Park Arts Center offers a variety of subjects in the performing, visual, and literary arts.
